In late 2019 there was a standoff between the popular President Martín Vizcarra and Congress when the latter, dominated by the opposition, refused to support anti-corruption legislation. The President dissolved Congress and they responded by suspending the President, although since it was argued they had technically ceased to exist, this was legally dubious and there was an ensuing constitutional crisis.
